Darren Barker was starting to be placed in the minds of boxing fans worldwide. Known for losing to Sergio Martinez and more recently taking a title for Daniel Geale. He than faced the man all non U.S. title holders seem to face, Felix Sturm. That’s when we found out Darren Barker is not “hip” for boxing.
Felix Sturm knocked down Barker twice, but after the first knockdown there was an apparent hip injury that took place when Darren Barker was rising back to his feet. Of course Felix Sturm capitalized off the injury and went in for the kill knocking down Barker again. Barker’s corner knew he could not continue as they threw in the towel.
One of the saddest things to see is a warrior of the sport having to call it quits dues to an injury. The fighting spirit will continue to live and thrive, but the body will say no. Due to the injury Darren Barker has announced his retirement from his career and beloved sport of professional boxing.
Darren Barker leaves the sport with an overall record of (26-2 16KO’s) at the age of 31 years old. His pro career started on Sept. 24, 2004.
