Chris Arreola Has Bronchitis, Fight With Bermane Stiverne Off

Chris Arreola

The comeback continues to stall badly for Chris Arreola (35-2, 30 KOs). Inactive for a full year, it looks like that inactivity will continue. ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports that Arreola has bronchitis, which has forced the cancellation of his fight with Bermane Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KOs), which would have been the final eliminator for the WBC mandatory challenger spot at heavyweight and a shot, for Arreola, at avenging a loss to Vitali Klitschko, the WBC’s champion in boxing’s glamour division.

Since losing to Tomasz Adamek in 2010, Arreola had put together a nice little winning streak and built some momentum for himself; seven straight opponents have fallen to his assault, five of those by knockout, but Arreola’s last fight was all the way back on February 18, 2012, a period of inactivity sufficient to knock him off of Boxrec’s ratings.

For Bermane Stiverne, this is probably a bullet dodged, since Arreola has looked much more impressive against a vastly better level of competition; this fight had early-round KO written all over it. Stiverne can continue to delude himself into believing he’s a championship contender, and he might even be able to snooker the WBC into letting him at Vitali Klitschko, where he can at least earn a nice paycheck cashing out his unearned reputation as a contender.

There is as yet no word from Goossen Tutor Promotions as to what will happen to the overall fight card that had as its co-feature an IBF junior lightweight title fight between Juan Carlos Salgado and Argenis Mendez. With a juicy potential co-feature in Javier Molina and Joseph Elegele scheduled for eight rounds in the welterweight division, it is not out of the question to consider that the fight could be lengthened to ten rounds and given proper co-featured event status. No matter what happens to the rest of the show at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California, Chris Arreola and his buffet-destroying appetite will not be part of the show. MyBoxing will keep you apprised of any additional developments as fight night approaches.
