With all of the great fights this weekend, the MyBoxing.com staff decided it would be a lot of fun for everyone to make their predictions public. Be sure to share your predictions for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs. Sergio Martinez, Canelo Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez and all of the undercard fights in comment below!
Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Robert Marroquin
Dan Calanca: “Rigondeaux has given us no reason to doubt him since his defection, and I’m not about to take the benefit of the doubt away from him. Poor Marroquin couldn’t even get his opponent locked in until this past week. I’d feel for him a bit more were he not about to top the undercard of a massive pay-per-view. Win some tie some, I suppose.” Rigondeaux over Marroquin, TKO 6.
Brian Ethridge: “Rigondeaux has a ton of talent at his disposal and I can’t imagine him losing his first big fight on the undercard of a huge pay-per-view event.” Rigondeaux by unanimous decision.
Clarence George: “I’m not much impressed with either of these guys. Whom have they fought? And how can Rigondeaux be second-ranked and WBA junior featherweight champ after only 10 bouts (even though all wins)? It’s ridiculous, and it says something about the current state of boxing – and nothing good. He’s 31 and has had only 10 bouts? Marroquin, at 23, has had more than twice that number (winning 20 of 21). Despite the fact that Rigondeaux has done slightly better percentage-wise in terms of KOs (eight out of 10 to Marroquin’s 14 out of 20).” Marroquin by split decision.
Paul Maupin: “With all the drama that has surrounded Rigondeaux on whether he will be able to fight, I think it will be hard for him to be in tip top shape.” Marroquin by decision.
Manny “Mitts” Murillo: “Rigondeuxhe has a lot of talent and will continue his up and coming streak for now.”

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon
Dan Calanca: “On one hand, Ponce De Leon hasn’t fought in a year and hasn’t won in 2. On the other hand, three of his four losses are to Gamboa, Broner, and Juan Manuel Lopez. I’m betting Gonzalez isn’t in their class.” Ponce De Leon over Gonzalez, TKO 8.
Brian Ethridge: “I see this as a very very close and competitive fight. My heart is telling me to side with Ponce De Leon, but my mind is telling me this fight will be too close to call.” Draw.
Clarence George: “Ponce De Leon wins by a 10th-round knockout.”
Paul Maupin: “Jhonny Gonzalez may have 7 losses but he has never lost as a featherweight.” Gonzalez by decision.
Manny “Mitts” Murillo: “I”ll take Gonzalez over Ponce De Leon, but I don’t have a reason.”

Saul Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez
Dan Calanca: “Lopez is no tomato can, but Alvarez is on another level than the puzzling Victor Ortiz. Plus, I could never pick against a fellow ginger. More ballsy prediction: after his win, Canelo will begin with the preordained talk of Mayweather, with whom I’m betting he fights on 5/4/2013.” Alvarez by unanimous decision.
Brian Ethridge: “As much as I would love to see Josesito Lopez pull off another amazing upset, I don’t see Saul Alvarez having a complete mental breakdown like Victory Ortiz has been known to have. Canelo will prove to be too big for Lopez.” Alvarez over Lopez, TKO 10.
Clarence George: “Alvarez stops Lopez in the 10th.”
Paul Maupin: “I like Josesito Lopez but I think going up in weight to fight a heavy handed guy like Alvarez was a bad choice.” Alvarez over Lopez, KO 3.
Manny “Mitts” Murillo: “I’m taking Saul Alvarez over Lopez. Two weight class moves over two fights is going to be too much for Lopez.”

Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Dan Calanca: “I have a gut feeling this fight looks similar to Pacquiao-Margarito, with Chavez playing the role of large Mexican body puncher coming forward against the ineffable assault of the quicker, more skilled man. Hopefully Chavez’s orbital bones are good and strong.” Martinez by unanimous decision.
Brian Ethridge: “Chavez Jr. has improved leaps and bounds with every single professional fight he has ever had. He hasn’t faced anyone quite as good as Martinez, but I believe he has been preparing for this fight for years. I don’t think Martinez has looked very impressive in his past few fights, while Chavez just keeps getting better and better.” Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision.
Clarence George: “Chavez by close, but unanimous decision.”
Paul Maupin:”Martinez-Chavez Jr. will be a good fight in the early rounds but I think Martinez will start to take over in the middle of the fight.” Martinez over Chavez Jr., KO 8.
Manny “Mitts” Murillo: “Sergio Martinez should win in a fight similar to Martinez vs Pavilik. Speed takes power, but with that being said I am going for Chavez Jr. Out with the old and in with the new.”
