Around the beginning of the year, two major rematches were supposed to happend. Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto and Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson.
In April of 2011 Victor Ortiz took on Andre Berto and defeated him in a sensational fight. The fight became fight of the year for 2011 and set up Ortiz with a showdown with PPV king Floyd Mayweather Jr. In 2012 Ortiz vs. Berto II was suppose to happen and provide fireworks just like the first bout. Then Andre Berto injures his shoulder in training camp. Fight is postponed until June 23rd, 2012. Or so we thought. Berto pops dirty the 2nd time around for a banned substance. Josesito Lopez steps up to the plate.
At the end of 2011 Amir Khan was making headlines becoming a big name in boxing. The man spars with Manny Pacquiao and shares the same trainer. Also at the end of 2011 Khan decides to do business with Lamont Peterson and take him on in his hometown of Washington D.C. Khan losses a contraversial match to Peterson, gets deducted points for excessive pushing, barely losing the fight on scorecards. They need to do it again, but wait another dirty test. Lamont Peterson tested positive twice for a banned substance on tests he asked for. The replacement, Danny “Swift” Garcia.
Josesito Lopez and Danny Garcia have become overnight sensations with big wins over boxings young stars. Lopez was a jawbreaker, breaking Vicious Victor’s jaw in the 9th round forcing him to quit with his jaw dropped just hanging. This replacement shocked the boxing world. He stole the big fight Canelo Alvarez was suppose to have with Ortiz on september 15, 2012. All this just a couple weeks when the great Manny Pacquiao was ripped off. Fans were done with boxing. BANG! Lopez brought it back with a jawdropping hook.
Peterson out, Garcia is in. Garcia has no chance. He is not on Khan’s level. That is how people felt about this matchup. Easy work from Amir Khan. Khan is on his way to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. The first 2 rounds started off with Amir Khan being faster. His punches having more force. One punch in round 3 would change the fight as well as the fight game. Garcia floors Khan with a hook that landed flush on Khan’s neck and back jaw line under the ear. Khan barely makes it back up, walking like an infant taking his first steps. Round 4 Khan will never fully recover physically. His mind was concious but his legs were gone. Garcia downs Khan 2 more times enroute to his TKO victory. This replacement just became a star. Earning an extra title in the process. Khan was given the WBA belt back just days before the fight. Garcia decided to take that too.
A little over a month after a big contraversial fight. Boxing was going down fast. Boxing needed these Replacement Killers. Two underdogs with nothing to lose taking the boxing world by storm. Changing the course of boxing immediately after boxing was in danger with upset fans. Thank you Replacement Killers, Danny Garcia and Josesito Lopez.
