Between NBC Sports’ triple header featuring Tomasz Adamek vs. Eddie Chambers and HBO’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Andy Lee there was a ton of boxing to follow tonight.
Here’s a quick look at the results from Saturday night with some opinions from yours truly.
NBC Sports card:
Bryant “By-By” Jennings defeats Steve “Freight Train” Collins by unanimous decision
NBC needs to stop hyping up Jennings as much as they have been. While he won the fight, it’s obvious he’ll never be able to compete with top notch heavyweights. Before the fight, NBC’s commentating crew mentioned that “By-By” still hasn’t quit his job as a mechanic which would allow him to focus on boxing full-time. If he’s smart, he’ll quit boxing and go back to fixing cars full-time.
Credit to Jennings for winning the fight, but even Butterbean could come out of retirement today and beat Collins.
Jamaal Davis outpointed Doel Carrasquillo
Boring fight. Not much to mention other than the fact that there was a six minute round because of some moronic time-keeper. He must’ve fell asleep during the fight. Can’t blame him much…
Tomasz Adamek wins by unanimous decision over “Fast” Eddie Chambers
The decision honestly could have gone either way. It was an extremely close fight. Nevertheless, Adamek received the win. Chambers was just as fast as ever and fought well considering his long layoff. IF he was smart, he would lose some of that belly fat and fight at cruiserweight. He sustained some sort of arm injury in this bout which could leave his career in jeopardy or maybe just another 16 month layoff from the sport.
Adamek looked like Adamek. No big surprises in his performance. He’s a decent heavyweight, but he’s no match for either Klitschko. I would love to see him fight Chris Arreola or Seth Mitchell next.
HBO fight card:
Timothy Bradley wins split decision over Manny Pacquiao
Yep, HBO replayed the robbery. Judge Duane Ford is still an idiot and Pacman still dominated the fight.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. beats Andy Lee by TKO
The stoppage was slightly premature, but Chavez was beginning to dominate the fight. Initially, Andy Lee had a great fight plan but Chavez never showed any respect for his punching power. Eventually Lee was tricked into a brawl which ultimately lost him the fight since Chavez may be the best brawler in the sport.
What Freddie Roach has been able to accomplish with Chavez Jr. is truly remarkable. The kid looks like a completely different fighter than he did just two years ago. He doesn’t have one-punch knockout power but every time he lands a punch, it clearly hurts his opponents. After destroying Lee, Chavez said he wants Sergio Martinez.
If anyone thinks Maravilla will defeat Chavez with ease, they’re sadly mistaken. Not only do I believe it would be one heck of a fight to watch, I’d put money on Jr. to pull off the upset. His size will make it nearly impossible for any middleweight to compete against.
Random thoughts from the night:
NBC Sports puts on a decent show, but they HAVE to get better at moving things along quicker for the viewers. They did everything they could to drag things out and for a fight card full of boring fighters, fans quickly lost interest.
As for HBO, it was nice to see Larry Merchant is still alive and kicking. He even made it through the night without bashing Floyd Mayweather. It was quite impressive!
