It’s no secret that Bernard Hopkins is very outspoken when it comes to anything involving race. Unfortunately, what eventually comes out of his mouth is always a negative comment about other ethnicities, and a positive comment on the superiority of African-Americans.
In a recent interview, Hopkins stated, “Jesse Owens ran against the Germans. We’re known in history. It’s in our DNA, most of us. It’s no secret that we are built differently. There’s no secret that we have things that other cultures don’t have and they have to work to get. It’s nothing that I made up or anything that was printed on a book two days ago. It’s called genetics.”
I guess Bernard doesn’t watch MMA at all huh?
This is the same guy who told Kelly Pavlik, after he beat him, that if he wanted to become a great boxer, he should start “fighting more like a black fighter”. Of course Hopkins was ignoring the fact that he himself was just coming off a loss to Joe Calzaghe, who of course is a white champion out of Wales. Ironically, Hopkins also told Calzaghe, before their fight, that he’d “never lose to a white fighter”. And much like his promise that he made to his mother that he’d retire at 40 years old; he lied.
Hopkins has also recently stated that the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao, would lose if he would ever fight an African-American fighter. Meaning that Joshua Clottey, who’s black, doesn’t count because he’s not “African-American”, he’s from Ghana. I guess the whole “genetics” thing doesn’t carry over to actual Africans! So much for DNA I guess?
Next time Hopkins opens his mouth and decides to disrespect every ethnic group in the entire world, excluding his own, he should open up a Ring magazine and take a gander at the champions in each weight division. There are 17 weight divisions in boxing, and only Timothy Bradley, Andre Ward and Steve Cunningham are ranked by Ring magazine as the number one fighter in their divisions, but not conclusively enough to award them with “Ring magazine belts”. Meaning that technically, there are no current African-Americans with a real championship, just BS sanctioning body titles, which means nothing these days. Also, if you look at Ring’s top-10 pound-for-pound list, only Mayweather and Timothy Bradley will be found. And Mayweather is considered the biggest coward boxing has ever seen, ever!
If any race has the right to talk smack right now, it would have to be Hispanics. 4 of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters, according to Ring, are of Hispanic descent, and 7 of the 17 weight classes have a Hispanic fighter sitting on top of it’s division. Asian fighters also have 3 of the top 6 ranked pound-for-pound fighters in boxing according to Ring.
Hopkins said “The athleticism that we possess and we are born with, most of us, not all of us-because I’ve seen some awkward black guys that can’t even tie their shoes. But the blessings of most of us, is that we run the races”
I guess someone should’ve told Sergio Martinez that before he dared enter the same ring as Paul Williams, huh?
